Greenland Election Results 2025: Greenland’s centre-right opposition has emerged victorious in the latest general election, according to near-complete results from Tuesday’s vote. The election was heavily influenced by renewed US interest in the autonomous Danish territory.
With over 90% of ballots counted, the Democratic party—which supports a gradual path to independence—has taken the lead with nearly 30% of the vote. The Naleraq party, which advocates for immediate separation from Denmark and stronger ties with the United States, follows closely behind at 25%.
✅ Centre-right Demokraatit party secures nearly 30% of the vote
✅ Pro-independence Naleraq party follows closely with 25%
✅ US interest in Greenland resurfaces as Trump pushes for acquisition
Current Prime Minister Mute B. Egede and his Inuit Ataqatigiit (IA) party, another pro-independence group, have dropped to third place, securing just over 21%.
Why Greenland’s Election Matters
Greenland, the world’s largest island, sits strategically between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans. Though it has been under Danish control for 300 years, it governs domestic affairs independently, while foreign and defence policies remain in Copenhagen’s hands.
The election results could significantly impact Greenland’s political future, especially given US President Donald Trump’s renewed push to acquire the island.

Trump Revives Interest in Buying Greenland
During his first term in 2019, Trump publicly floated the idea of buying Greenland. Since returning to office in January 2025, he has reiterated his intentions.
“We need Greenland for national security. One way or another, we’re gonna get it,” he declared in his US Congress address last week.
However, both Greenlandic and Danish leaders have strongly rejected the idea.
Prime Minister Egede emphasized that Greenland is not for sale, stating that his nation deserves to be treated with respect.
With a new government in place, Greenland’s political direction—and its relationship with Denmark and the US—remains a major global talking point.
