President Donald Trump’s four-day diplomatic visit to the Middle East began on a sleepy note Tuesday as he appeared to doze off during a welcome ceremony in Saudi Arabia.
Trump, 78, arrived in Riyadh to an official reception hosted by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the country’s de facto ruler. The event marked the start of what the White House says will be a high-stakes trip focused on brokering new trade and investment deals between the United States and Gulf nations.

“Trump is having a hard time keeping his eyes open in Saudi Arabia,” journalist Aaron Rupar wrote on X (formerly Twitter), alongside a video clip of the moment.
Another user commented, “Sleepy Don can barely keep his eyes open while representing the United States in Saudi Arabia. If this were President Biden, there would be nonstop coverage of his cognitive condition and physical fitness. Where is the media outrage?”
In response to the circulating footage, White House Communications Director Steven Cheung pushed back against suggestions that the president had fallen asleep.
“It’s clear that President Trump was fully engaged and listening intently as he finalized historic deals on his return to Saudi Arabia,” Cheung said in a statement. “The Daily Beast should perk up and stop slacking instead of taking their cues from liberal liars who have shown a history of deceiving the American people.”
During the ceremony, Trump was seated in a lavish chair as part of the traditional welcome. While the setting was regal, viewers couldn’t help but notice that the president seemed to use the moment to rest his eyes.
This isn’t the first time Trump has been accused of dozing off in public. During his 2024 hush money trial in New York, several courtroom reporters noted that he appeared to fall asleep during parts of the proceedings.
At the time, Trump dismissed the reports, writing on Truth Social, “I don’t fall asleep during the Crooked D.A.’s Witch Hunt, especially not today. I simply close my beautiful blue eyes, sometimes, listen intensely, and take it ALL in!!!”
His critics have been quick to point out the irony, given Trump’s long-standing attacks on President Joe Biden, whom he frequently dubbed “Sleepy Joe” during the 2020 and 2024 campaigns.
Now serving his second term, Trump is on track to become the oldest sitting president in U.S. history by the end of his tenure. Though moments like Tuesday’s ceremony may not carry significant diplomatic consequences, they often fuel broader public scrutiny about the physical demands of the office and the age of its occupant.
Whether Trump was simply resting his eyes or momentarily overwhelmed by jet lag remains up for debate. But with cameras capturing every move, such instances are unlikely to escape public attention.
