In a scathing “Weekend Update” segment on Saturday Night Live, Colin Jost didn’t just criticize President Donald Trump’s tariffs that have wreaked havoc on the global economy; he also took aim at the tech CEOs who claimed to be surprised by their fallout.
“The CEOs of many tech companies who supported Trump’s campaign said they were shocked by all his tariffs,” Jost quipped. “Well, yeah, he hardly ever mentioned them.”
Jost then played a montage of Trump proudly boasting about imposing tariffs during his 2024 campaign, with Trump even declaring, “I love tariffs!”
“It’s like listening to Bubba Gump talk about shrimp,” Jost mocked.
Trump’s Economic Chaos: A ‘Weekend Update’ Roast
As if the tariffs weren’t enough, Jost turned his attention to Trump’s recent moves: “This week, President Trump tried to rescue the economy from the disastrous policies of whoever was president last week.”
He continued, “On Wednesday, Trump announced a 90-day pause on most tariffs. Now, 90 days may not seem like much, but remember, Trump has only been president for 82 days.”
Jost added with a grin, “Already it feels like a goddamn decade.”
Che’s Biting Remarks
Michael Che, Jost’s co-anchor, didn’t hold back either, poking fun at Trump’s handling of the situation:
“Trump responded to the fallout from his tariffs by saying, ‘Sometimes you have to take medicine to fix something,’” Che said. “Yeah, but this feels like we took a whole bottle of medicine with a glass of vodka and laid in a warm bath.”
Che also had a jab for Elon Musk, who reportedly appealed directly to Trump to halt his tariffs:
“It was reported that Elon Musk personally asked Trump to stop the tariffs. And guess what? The stock market went up like this,” Che said, while displaying a now-infamous image of Musk seemingly making a Nazi salute at Trump’s inauguration event.
Finally, Che took aim at Trump’s stance on U.S. manufacturing, referencing a new report that suggested iPhones could cost up to $3,500 if manufactured in America.
“Well, that’s a lot,” Che joked, “but remember, your kids would get an employee discount.”
