In a fiery statement that’s already sparking national debate, Maryland Democrat Rep. Kweisi Mfume said former President Donald Trump and tech mogul Elon Musk should be arrested—acknowledging that his remarks may sound “crazy and ludicrous,” but insisting the nation needs to confront powerful individuals who undermine democracy.
The remarks came during a town hall appearance in Baltimore on Wednesday, where Mfume veered from policy talk into a full-throated critique of Trump and Musk. “You may think I’m crazy,” he said, “but I believe Trump and Elon Musk should be arrested. What they’re doing to this country is dangerous.”
Mfume, who has served multiple terms representing Maryland’s 7th District and once led the NAACP, is no stranger to speaking out. But this comment—targeting both the former president and one of the world’s richest men—marks a bold escalation.
“Dangerous Men,” Says Mfume
Though he didn’t offer legal specifics, Mfume pointed to what he called “ongoing manipulation of public trust” by the two men. “Trump continues to erode the rule of law,” he said, “while Musk is leveraging technology, media, and money to shift public perception in ways that serve only him.”
Elon Musk, who has repeatedly inserted himself into political discourse—whether via posts on X (formerly Twitter), influence in the EV market, or ongoing AI ventures—has increasingly become a political lightning rod. His ties to Trump, both publicly and behind the scenes, have been noted by political analysts and watchdog groups.
Outrage and Support Follow
As expected, Mfume’s comments quickly drew backlash from conservative figures. “This is political persecution in its most unhinged form,” tweeted Rep. Lauren Boebert. Others dismissed it as theatrical grandstanding.
Still, progressive groups and liberal commentators praised Mfume’s boldness. “He said what many are too afraid to,” posted one progressive PAC. “Trump and Musk aren’t above accountability.”
A Pattern of Escalating Rhetoric
The comment comes amid rising tension nationwide, as Trump continues his campaign while facing legal troubles in multiple jurisdictions. At the same time, Musk’s influence over media, AI, and electric vehicles has intensified, raising ethical concerns.
Mfume has not issued a formal follow-up to his comments, but aides say he stands by them.
Legal Experts Weigh In
Legal analysts have cast doubt on any imminent legal action against Musk or Trump based on Mfume’s remarks. “Free speech and personal wealth are not crimes,” said Georgetown law professor Maya Alvarez. “But the broader point—that unchecked power can undermine democracy—is one worth discussing.”
As the 2026 midterms approach, the comments may become a rallying point—both for critics of authoritarianism and for those decrying what they see as a weaponized justice system.
