White House officials have urged former U.S. President Donald Trump not to engage in a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin until Russia agrees to a comprehensive ceasefire in Ukraine, according to a report by NBC News.
The caution comes amid ongoing conflict and mutual accusations between Russia and Ukraine over violations of a limited truce, particularly targeting energy infrastructure.
Trump’s Plans to Speak With Putin
Trump has already held at least two phone calls with Putin since February. He recently announced plans to connect again with the Russian leader, expressing his intention to strengthen diplomatic relations and possibly arrange an in-person meeting.
However, according to NBC’s sources, White House advisors are concerned that initiating a new dialogue without securing a ceasefire could undermine diplomatic leverage.

Risk of Premature Contact
Officials reportedly warned that Trump might still “suddenly” decide to contact Putin, despite their advice. The administration believes any talks should only proceed after Russia commits clearly to halting its military actions in Ukraine.
Trump has also voiced frustration over Putin’s hesitance to agree to a broader ceasefire, which remains a major hurdle in the ongoing negotiation process.
Key Meeting With Russian Envoy
In a parallel development, Kirill Dmitriev, a close Putin associate and his special envoy for international investment cooperation, visited the White House. He met with Trump’s team and key Republican lawmakers, including Senators Lindsey Graham and Markwayne Mullin.
The discussions reportedly focused on the ceasefire roadmap and Putin’s conditions for de-escalation. These talks took place at Trump’s request.
Hope for Agreement, But Differences Remain
Speaking to CNN, Dmitriev said there is a general understanding of how to move forward, but admitted that “lots” of differences still exist between both sides.
“I think there is an understanding for how we can move to finalize the agreement,” he said.
