Chaos: U.S. Accidentally Orders Ukrainian Refugees to Leave the Country!

In a shocking turn of events, the U.S. government mistakenly told some Ukrainian refugees this week that they had to leave the country immediately — but later admitted it was all a big mistake.

Thousands of Ukrainian families who came to the U.S. seeking safety after Russia’s invasion were left terrified after receiving an email from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), saying their legal protection was ending and they must leave within 7 days.

The message warned them that if they didn’t leave, they could be arrested and deported. It even said their work permits would be canceled, and urged them to use a government app to “self-deport.”

What Did the Email Say?

“Do not attempt to remain in the United States — the federal government will find you. Please depart the United States immediately.”

That was just one of the shocking lines in the notice, dated April 3. It said their “parole” status (a temporary protection given by the U.S.) was being revoked.

DHS Says: “Oops, It Was a Mistake”

After receiving questions from CBS News, the DHS admitted the message was sent by accident.

“A message was sent in error to some Ukrainians under the U4U program,” the department said in a statement.

They quickly followed up with a second email to the refugees:

“You may have received an email notification titled ‘Notice of Termination of Parole.’ The Department of Homeland Security sent this email to you in error. No action will be taken with respect to your parole.”

What Is the “Uniting for Ukraine” Program?

The Uniting for Ukraine (U4U) program was launched under President Biden in 2022. It allowed Americans to sponsor Ukrainian families fleeing war. Over 240,000 Ukrainians have arrived in the U.S. through this program. The status gives them temporary protection, including the right to work and stay in the country.

Why People Are Still Worried

Even though DHS says the message was a mistake, many immigration advocates are still concerned. Since returning to office, former President Trump has started reversing many Biden-era immigration programs — especially those that rely on “parole authority.”

He has already:

  • Stopped accepting new applications for U4U.
  • Ended similar programs for people from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela.
  • Told over 500,000 migrants they must leave the U.S. by April 24 or face deportation.

Final Thoughts

This “accidental deportation notice” has added fear and uncertainty for thousands of Ukrainian refugees who thought they were safe. While the government has apologized, many are left wondering: Was it really just a mistake — or a preview of what’s to come?
